( )Īpparently I love everything Bec McMaster writes. If you enjoy crumbling mansions, kudzu, tragic love affairs, and supernatural elements delivered with a southern flare, then you will enjoy reading this anthology. “Love, Sugar” by Tiffany Trent has the typical goth trope of an old house inheritance that comes with a ghost love interest. “Return to Me” by Elle Jasper is another past life story with a very Gothic setting a dark storm night and an old dark house. “Dream, Interrupted” by Jill Archer is a retelling of the story of Persephone, one of my favorite myths. “Wylde Magic” by Erin Kellison is a great shape-shifter story. “The Devil Went Down” by Sonya Bateman has many elements I enjoy, the Civil War, past life memories, and angels and demons in a classic fight between light and dark. The supernatural elements include past life memories, ghosts, shape-shifters, vampires, and witches. I skipped a few stories that were too steamy and one that was very silly. I liked the stories that were light on romance and heavy on supernatural elements. I always enjoy Gothic ghost stories but I rarely read romances. The atmosphere is hot, humid and rainy with swamps, Spanish moss, and kudzu. There are a lot of plantation houses and crumbling mansions. The South is a good setting for such Gothic stories. This is an anthology with each story set in the American south from Southern California to Georgia. I'm impressed such visceral characters could be packed into so few pages (4 stars)

None of my favorite tropes in this one, but I loved it nonetheless. (2.5 stars)īec McMaster -The Many Lives of Hadley MonroeĪpparently I love everything Bec McMaster writes. Basically, it's "oh you're a vampire? Cool, everything's forgiven, let's be boyfriend/girlfriend." I might give the series a shot if I have a hankering for vampires, but there are a lot of options in that genre, so we'll see.

Well, I like a bit of angst, but this gets tied up WAY to quickly, even accounting for the limited length. Interesting world-building, so I'd maybe check out a series, but this one suffered a little from the extreme short length (3 stars). I liked this, but it was resolved waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too quickly (like in three sentences). A nice wee bit of angst between the former lovers, but I'm not really into storylines with children, so there's that. This was interesting, and might get me to check out the series (eventually).
